Another Italian adventure begins for Lucrezia Cergol. The 2001-born forward and captain of the women's Serie A1 team at Pallanuoto Trieste has indeed been called up by Setterosa's head coach, Carlo Silipo, for the World Cup in Fukuoka, scheduled to take place in the Japanese city from July 16th to July 29th. This is a great achievement for the Trieste native and the Samer & Co. Shipping-sponsored club. After achieving numerous podium finishes with youth selections, Lucrezia won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Split last September. Italy will give it another shot, even though the competition is fierce, with the USA and Spain leading the way. Italy will also have to contend with Hungary, the Netherlands, and Greece.
Setterosa has been placed in Group C, and on Sunday, July 16th, they will face Argentina in their debut (9:00 AM Italian time). On Tuesday, July 18th, at 5:00 AM, they will take on South Africa, and on Thursday, July 20th, at 3:30 AM, they will confront Greece in a match that will likely be decisive for determining the top spot in the group. The matches will be broadcast live on Rai Due and Sky Sport Summer. Then, the knockout phase begins, and the top two teams at the World Cups will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The players called up for the Fukuoka World Cup are: Silvia Avegno (Matarò), Lucrezia Cergol (Pallanuoto Trieste), Caterina Banchelli (Rn Florentia), Roberta Bianconi (Rapallo Pallanuoto), Chiara Tabani, Giuditta Galardi, Domitilla Picozzi, Sofia Giustini, Agnese Cocchiere (Sis Roma), Claudia Marletta, Valeria Palmieri, Giulia Viacava, Aurora Condorelli, Dafne Bettini, Veronica Gant (Orizzonte Catania).
