Euro Cup: Trieste smiles again, defeating Ortigia in Nesima Pool (11-14)

A significant morale boost for Trieste. Daniele Bettini: "Finally, I've seen my boys again." Andrea Brazzatti: "A first step to regain confidence in our abilities."
Trieste Water Polo returns to victory. In the fifth day of the men's Euro Cup, the Samer & Co. Shipping-sponsored team triumphed away against Ortigia Siracusa with a score of 11-14. The clear victory at the Nesima pool does not change the situation in Group D, where Primorac Kotor and Panionios are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages. However, it restores morale and confidence to Daniele Bettini's group. "Finally," exclaims the coach, "I've seen my boys. Excellent performance, consistent, with reasoning, without lapses in concentration." "A first step," analyzes the sports director Andrea Brazzatti, "to regain confidence in our abilities and play the aggressive water polo our coach desires."
The match report: Bettini is forced to do without the suspended Marziali, replaced by the 2004 Alessandro Fumo. Trieste is lively in the start and maneuvers well with the extra man. Dasic strikes diagonally (0-1), Cupido responds (1-1), Valentino turns at the buoy (1-2), and Cassia escapes in transition (2-2). Another beautiful move in superiority allows Razzi to sign the 2-3, La Rosa puts in the 3-3, and Vrlic collects a loose ball for the 3-4 at the end of the first period. The second quarter opens with Oliva's feat, saving a penalty from Inaba, and the 4-4 by Carnesecchi. The guests express themselves with fluidity. Mezzarrobba places the ball in the top corner, and Dasic scores the penalty for 4-6. Ferrerro shortens (5-6), Dasic doesn't miss with the extra man (5-7), and Valentino finds the corner (5-8). The Sicilians stay close with a "rise and shoot" from Inaba: 6-8 at the change of ends.
The third quarter is nothing short of seesaw. Trieste reaches the maximum advantage with Buljubasic and Bini (6-10) but has to endure the home team's reaction, who, within 1 minute, return to -1 thanks to the goals of Inaba, Ferrero on penalty, and Cassia (9-10). Valentino in superiority re-establishes the double advantage (9-11), Cassia and another penalty converted by Ferrero bring the contest back into balance (11-11). Right on the buzzer at the end of the period, Dasic turns in the air behind Tempesti for the new precious +1: 11-12 with 8 minutes left. In the fourth period, Trieste is flawless. They concede nothing defensively, slow down the pace as needed, and hit with two goals from Mezzarobba and Valentino for the final score of 11-14.
Next Saturday, November 25, another championship match awaits at the "Bruno Bianchi" against Telimar Palermo at 3:30 PM.
